Welcoming a new baby into your home is a momentous and joyful occasion. Capturing these early days with a lifestyle newborn in-home photo session allows you to preserve precious memories in the comfort of your own surroundings. These sessions are relaxed, natural, and focused on the love and connection within your family. Here's everything you need to know to prepare for a memorable and beautiful in-home newborn photo session.
What is a Lifestyle Newborn In-Home Photo Session?
A lifestyle newborn session is all about capturing the real-life moments and natural interactions that occur in your home. Unlike posed studio sessions, lifestyle photography focuses on the candid, authentic moments shared between you, your baby, and your family. The result is a collection of images that tell the story of your life together, filled with emotion and genuine connection.
Preparing for the Session
1. Choose the Right Time: The best time for a newborn session is within the first two to four weeks of your baby's life. During this time, babies are usually sleepier and more likely to rest as we work through your photos together. Knowing when baby is least fussy is helpful as well. I typically aim for 9-10am.
2. Light and Space: Natural light is key for beautiful, soft images. Choose rooms with ample natural light—usually the nursery, master bedroom, and living room are ideal. We can tidy and move things as needed.
3. Outfit Selection: Keep outfits simple and neutral to avoid distractions. Soft, pastel colors and light, airy fabrics work well. Coordinating without matching helps maintain a cohesive look. Avoid bold patterns and logos. Start with what feels most comfortable to your postpartum body (if you have delivered a baby) and build everyone’s outfits around that. Baby can start in a simple sleeper or onesie and we can make adjustments as needed.
4. Comfort and Safety: Ensure the temperature in your home is warm enough for your newborn, especially if you'll be doing some shots without clothing. Have any special blankets or gifts you want baby photographed with set aside.
During the Session
1. Feeding and Changing: Expect to take breaks for feeding and changing. A well-fed baby is a happy baby, and these breaks also provide opportunities for candid moments with parents. I am in no rush.
2. Posing and Interaction: Your photographer will guide you through natural poses and interactions. Focus on holding, cuddling, and interacting with your baby as you normally would. These genuine moments create the most heartwarming photos.
3. Siblings and Pets: Including older siblings and pets can add a special touch to your session. Encourage siblings to interact naturally with the baby—kisses, cuddles, and playtime all make for wonderful photos.
After the Session
1. Viewing and Selecting Images: After the session, your photographer will edit the best images and provide you with a gallery of digital images. You will be able to download and share/print them as you see fit. I also offer prints, announcements, and other items if you would like to have those things taken care of for you.
2. Printing and Displaying: Consider printing your photos in various formats—albums, wall art, or prints—to display around your home. These images are a beautiful reminder of the love and joy that your new baby brings. I will share my favorite printers with you.
Conclusion
A lifestyle newborn in-home photo session is a beautiful way to capture the fleeting moments of your baby's early days. With a focus on natural light, genuine interactions, and the comfort of your own home, you'll have timeless images that you'll cherish for years to come. Preparing thoughtfully and embracing the spontaneity of the session will ensure that your photos truly reflect the love and warmth of your growing family.
